Management of Medical and Airway Emergencies in the Dental Office

This half day course will provide didactic, video, and case-based hands-on skills labs dealing with medical and airway emergencies possible in the dental and sedation settings. Participants will review, practice, and demonstrate proficiency in managing emergencies including but not limited to respiratory distress and failure, using bag mask, oral and nasal airways, perilaryngeal devices, as well as intubation and cricothyrotomy. Recognizing and treating emergencies such as cardiac events, stroke, syncope, seizures, allergic reactions and laryngospasm will be reviewed and practiced.

Requirements

Effective 3/2013

The board requires non-permitted dentists who are assisting with the treatment of sedated patients to obtain 4 hours of Continuing Education in Airway Management.

Effective 3/2014

All dentists who hold an active sedation permit of any level must complete four (4) hours of continuing education in airway management and four (4) hours of continuing education in medical emergencies, every four (4) years from the last date the dentist took the continuing education course. The four (4) hours in airway management must include two hours didactic training in providing dentistry on sedated patients with compromised airways and two hours must include hands-on training in airway management of sedated patients.

EFFECTIVE 3/2020 FL Statute(64B5-14.004)

All dentists who hold an active sedation permit of any level shall complete a 4-hour board approved continuing education course in medical emergencies that shall include airway management every license biennial.
