The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Home Health Aide (HHA) may need to assist a client with the administration of their medications. This is a task that carries huge responsibilities and requires specific training for those individuals who will be assisting a client in these activities. This training is designed to promote a clear picture of the role of unlicensed personnel who will be assisting a client with their medications. It is important to note that in the state of Florida, to assist is not to give the medication, but rather to simply help the client to take their medications. These medications include those that are prescribed by a physician as well as over the counter (OTC), or non-prescribed medications. This assistance with medications may occur in a home health setting or an Assisted Living Facility in which the client may be residing. Florida Chapter Administration Code 58A-5.091 states the healthcare provider must complete an initial 4 hour training session followed by an additional 2 hours of training annually on providing assistance with self-administered medications.

Health care workers frequently encounter individuals who are cognitively impaired. Cognitive impairments affect the ability to think, concentrate, formulate ideas, reason and retain information. Although often associated primarily with old age, cognitive decline may occur due to a variety of reasons such as:

The signs of cognitive impairment include memory loss, changes in behavior or personality, loss of judgment or the ability to make decisions and other communication difficulties. When a person suffers from cognitive impairment it can be challenging to communicate effectively with them. As healthcare workers, it is very important that we are able to have the patience, understanding and skills to provide quality care to those individuals who are affected by cognitive impairment.

Yet Americans remain strangely reluctant to discuss the concept of their own end-of-life preferences. In 2010 the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) stated that less than one third of Americans have placed their wishes in writing and the other two thirds have not thought about the issue at all, or have not shared their thoughts with others. This unfortunate avoidance of topic is compounded by a medical community that often feels uncomfortable discussing a terminal diagnosis with a patient and may associate death with the “failure of treatment.”

Family violence is the most reported violent crime in America. The family unit is a complicated system and abuse in any part may lead to issues that affect the family as a whole. Every person, young and old deserves to be treated with respect and to be safe from harm. Unfortunately, family violence (the abuse of a child, intimate partner or elder) occurs throughout our country every day. The focus needs to shift from any acceptance of family violence to one that empowers families and communities through education and advocacy programs that support a zero tolerance for abuse of any form. This can be achieved by a change in family and cultural attitudes, which carry a strong message that violence is never acceptable and often has lifelong negative consequences.

The state of Florida requires CNA’s to obtain 1-hour per month in Continuing Education subjects, that is 12 hours per year or 24 hours in the 2-year licensing period.
Florida rule 64B9-15.011 states every 2 years, in-service training shall include (but is not limited to) 24 hours in a minimum of the following areas:
- Bloodborne Pathogens / Infection Control
- Family Violence
- Medical Documentation/Resident’s Rights & HIPPA
- Communication With The Cognitively Impaired
- Medical Error Prevention and Safety
- CPR Skills
Our program will cover 22 hours (you can take all or some) of appropriate curriculum, including the above, but will not provide CPR skills needed to complete the recertification.
